In his third inning of work, Carlos Alvarez gave up a single run in the bottom of the eleventh as Inland Empire lost to San Jose 4-3. Prior to that, Jesus Rodriguez kept the Inland Empire in the game with three shutout innings of relief.
Russell Mitchell was the hitting star in the loss. He went three for five with a double and a run.
Preston Mattingly had one of his best games of the season in the Loons 13-6 win over the Lugnuts. He went three for five and he came a single short of hitting for the cycle. He drove in two runs and scored three times and the nice game pushes him back over the Mendoza line. Matthew Berezay also had a nice game. He went two for five with a double, a homerun, three RBIs and two runs.
Jesus Rodriguez picked up the win with 3 1/3 innings of solid relief. He gave up two runs (one earned) on one hit and three walks with a strikeout.
Starter Steven Johnson had a solid if short start for the Loons yesterday. He gave up just a single run on three hits and two walks with three strikeouts in only four innings of work. Even better then that was the pen as Michael Gardner and Jesus Rodriguez threw five shutout innings in which they gave up just three hits with five strikeouts.
Centerfielder Trayvon Robinson had the big day at the plate. He went three for four with two runs and an RBI.
